Movie theaters were still filled with annoying texters and talkers, but they were open for business.
It started off on a series of high points: a fruitful Sundance, a history-making Oscar win for Parasite, the release of several notable 2019 fest-circuit gems for general-public consumption. And he did a perfect job! Actually all three main actors did the best acting possible. This was not the year we were promised. James Rolleston was never actually intended to play the lead role of "Boy" - he originally turned up on set for a costume fitting as an extra and after short deliberation the teen was offered the role. Waititi wanted to shoot the film where he grew up in Waihau Bay and he did it. and there is not much to desire there - just an immature hoodlum who has returned to find a bag of money he buried years before after a robbery. Boy's father, Alamein, appears out of the blue (actually he was in jail), and having imagined a heroic version of his father during his absence, Boy comes face to face with the real version. Gran has to leave for a week to attend a funeral in Wellington and Boy is in charge of the household and caring for other children. Boy is an 11-year-old who lives on a farm with his gran, a goat called Leaf, his younger brother who thinks he has super powers, Rocky and several cousins. The events in this adorable movie are happening in 1984, and Michael Jackson is a king - even in Waihau Bay, New Zealand. His coming-of-age comedy-drama Boy has done very well in New Zealand, reaching several records, and it's starting conquering the globe with its charm. he is a New Zealand-born film director, writer, painter, comedian and actor named who was named 5 years ago on Variety's "ten new directors to watch"! The guys who named him new what talent he has. Taika Waititi will be 37 on 16 August 1975. But I think the heartfelt script and the imaginative sense of humor still makes this a great movie and one that I highly recommend. Really, this is a movie that is not without its flaws. A mother he never met, and I thought that was very well done. Because of this, he believes he has superpowers and while it does lead to some funny moments, it's also done to illustrate Rocky's issues with his mother's death. I found the character of Rocky to be, by far, the most interesting of the film because of the fact that he believes he kills his own mother during his birth. If anything, of the actors who played Boy and Rocky, I found the actor that played Rocky to be the one that most pleasantly surprised me. I think that's forgivable considering that, I believe, this was his first time acting. The acting is really strong from all involved but there are moments, to me, where James Rolleston, who plays Boy, has some missteps. So I don't know, what ended up happening to Boy felt a little bit rushed, but it's still good.
There is that moment when Alamein comes and yells at Boy for taking his jacket, but then he apologizes and it's all back to normal. It was certainly well-done and solidly acted but, again, it would've been better if it had been building up over a period of time rather than all of it coming at once. If there is one problem is that the stress that Boy has from seeing that his father is just a regular man, and not the superhero he imagined, and from the death of his pet goat probably comes to close to the ending for it to be truly effective, at least in my opinion. I think the movie is certainly emotionally engaging without being sentimental or resorting to cheap tactics, which is always a good thing. That fantasy he has lived all these years is shattered once he sees his father get beat up in a fight near the climax of the movie. The film sees Boy, as Alamein comes back into his life after being in prison, as he finally gets to see that his father, while not a bad man per se, isn't exactly as perfect as he'd imagine. To the point where he creates this exaggerated image in his mind of a father who's absolutely perfect who will take him away and they'll live in a mansion, wear suits and ride dolphins.
Boy, literally.that's his name, idolizes his father, who's been gone for years. I don't think this film tells a story that is wholly unique. I hadn't heard of Taika Waititi before this film, but after this film he is definitely someone to keep your eye on as he's quite adeptly combines a quirky, and imaginative, sense of humor, offbeat charm with emotional depth and strong character development. Incredible coming-of-age film right here.
